Southern Maryland Tobacco Auction

The crop of Elam S. Fisher, an Amish tobacco farmer in St. Mary's County, is unloaded before the start of the Southern Maryland tobacco auction. A truck from the Farmers Tobacco Auction Warehouse ventured out before and during the auction to gather crops from some of the Amish farms nearby. Once a month-long celebration of Southern Maryland's rural heritage and life, the annual Farmers Tobacco Auction has dwindled to three days. In one Hughesville warehouse little more than 300,000 pounds were sold, compared to more then a million last year. The first auction by Farmers Tobacco Auction Warehouse was in 1939; this would be the last.
