  • "CHUNK"<br />
Life for 17-year-old "Chunk," James to his family, is not easy. He lives with his mother, a six-year-old sister and two recently born twin boys. The family is on welfare and his stepfather has been jailed for drugs. As with many teens like him, the high school junior has difficulty getting work or keeping a job.<br />
<br />
The lure of the gang lifestyle, with its drugs, money and sense of kinship, constantly tugs at him. Chunk feels the weight of the world on his shoulders, and feels it is getting heavier by the day. He sees his escape as when he graduates high school and attempts to join the Marine Corps.<br />
<br />
<br />
"Chunk" as James is known among his friends, cleans the family car every weekend even though he cannot drive it. The family cannot afford car insurance, thus no license.

  • Like many teens, Chunk is dissatisfied with his family life. He is more at ease and finds more comfort with friends, particularly outside of the house.

  • Home after spending a Friday night searching for a party never found, Chunk' sister Christina curls up with him in his bedroom as his friends play Nintendo.

  • After smoking $20 worth of weed in celebration of a friend's birthday, each of the boys takes turns hitting her on the leg sixteen times-once for each of her years.

  • A moment of contemplation stops Chunk cold after playing football with friends on a Sunday afternoon. "Nothing" he sternly simply replis when asked what he is thinking.

  • "Just more stuff I have to do," Chunk says of the twins. He resists caring for them when asked to do so, but appears quite fond of the newborn siblings.

  • Cynthia gives Chunk a stern lecture after he came home and mouthed off to her. She tries to keep a tight leash on her son and has strict rules, particularly when it comes to curfew.<br />
<br />
<br />
The 31-year-old mother recently gave birth to twins alone because their father, Chunk's stepfather, is in jail for drug possession. She divorced his first father when he was six.

  • Being stoned, Chunk says, is the only time he forgets his troubles. He and his friends get high when the marijuana is available. That means when they have enough money.

  • With the bedroom window his only way into the apartment after getting locked out, Chunk manages to get in after forgetting his keys and wallet. He did not get far with his friends before realizing he did not have the two items.

  • The Hemp Kings, Chunk's party crew, gather for lunch each day at the high school. Usually without enough money on hand to buy his own meal, Chunk gets food or money from the others.

  • Chunk does not realize his own strength as he plays or horses around with friends. This is evident as he chokes Benito Chavez too tightly.

  • Because his grades were not high enough the year before, Chunk was cut from the football team. He has worked to raise his marks, but often resorts to cheating. A classmate passes him a crib note during a biology quiz. "Every test I get his answers, but change them a little so the teacher won't know," he said.

  • Fluffy Sayan, a silkie hen, lives in Hunt Vally with several other chickens and three children. Kristen and Paul Sayan adopted a young Silkie hen they christened Fluffy, which is a unique characteristic of the breed. Blind in one eye from an infection early in life, Fluffy lives kind of large with the Sayans. "She is extremely friendly and tolerates being carried around constantly," says Kristen.<br />
<br />
Fluffy has also become the family's largest egg producer, laying five to seven eggs per week and continuing to lay long into the fall, when their other chickens stop for the year.

  • Dakota, a nine-year-old Doberman-Labrador-Rottweiler mix, was adopted from BARCS in January 2004 by Barb Nelms and Charles Turesko of Ellicott City.<br />
<br />
At the age of 12 months, his first family decided he was too big, and too much work, as they prepared for the holidays. He was skin and bones at 51 pounds with chronic intestinal upset. Unfamiliar with how to navigate stairs or the sounds of a washing machine or dishwasher, they believe he'd spent most of his life outdoors.<br />
<br />
Nine years later he weights 95 pounds, and looks athletic and trim.
