• Growing up near Johns Hopkins Hospital in East Baltimore, Esther McCready knew by the age of 8 that she wanted to be a nurse. However, she needed the help of the courts to gain acceptance to the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Aided by National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, she gained admittance in 1950, becoming the first Black student to attend the school. She graduated in 1953.

A display case in the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History dedicated a display case to items she donated. McCready died in 2020 at the age of 89.

 • The crop of Elam S. Fisher, an Amish tobacco farmer in St. Mary's County, is unloaded before the start of the Southern Maryland tobacco auction. A truck from the Farmers Tobacco Auction Warehouse ventured out before and during the auction to gather crops from some of the Amish farms nearby. Once a month-long celebration of Southern Maryland's rural heritage and life, the annual Farmers Tobacco Auction has dwindled to three days. In one Hughesville warehouse little more than 300,000 pounds were sold, compared to more then a million last year. The first auction by Farmers Tobacco Auction Warehouse was in 1939; this would be the last.

 • Jamie Hollandsworth has had pets all her life, but she wasn't quite sure what to expect when her nephew asked her to take in a turtle he'd bought on vacation. Then the size of a quarter, Franklin came to live in Hollandsworth's Bel Air home.

It is illegal to sell eggs or turtles smaller than four inches throughout the United States, and in Maryland it is illegal to release the species, declared invasive, into the wild. This often happens after owners realize the cute baby turtles can turn into a lifetime commitment. Most red-eared slider turtles live for 20 to 30 years, although some can live for more than 40, and can grow to a foot in length.

Life with the turtle hasn't come without surprises. "I thought Franklin was a male when I got him seven years ago," she says. "But this past March, I found 10 eggs in her tank. We now know that Franklin is a female." Whoops.

 • The beer-fueled running of the urinals continued in 2008 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore even though preventative measures were taken in the Preakness Day infield. He was conscious when taken away, ending his day in the infield before the 133rd Preakness at Pimlico. The gap was supposed to stop the runners.
